Greenwood - The girlfriend of 18-year-old suspect Kyle Collins says she was just feet away when a gunfight broke out. It happened Wednesday night near the McDonald's in Greenwood.

Collins was a passenger in a vehicle pulled over for speeding. Police say he pulled a gun and a shoot-out ensued, ending in Collins' death. Two officers were injured.

"I just can't believe it. I was talking to the dude Tuesday. He had just got off work everything was okay," said Anthony Mowery, Collins' friend.

Kyle Collins wanted to own his own restaurant. Overnight he died in the parking lot of one. Greenwood police say he pulled a 9-millimeter semi-automatic and fired six rounds before he was hit by return gunfire from two injured officers he shot.

Former neighbor and co-worker Anthony Mowery stood outside Collins apartment trying to make sense of it all.

"He was going to college - Ivy Tech - to get his bachelor's degree. He was a good cook, I know that," Mowery said. "I never heard anyone say anything bad about him. His nickname was 'the goat.'" The 'goat' stood for goatee.

Collins' girlfriend, who was seen being led away in handcuffs Wednesday night, says she watched her boyfriend die. She wouldn't talk on camera but said, "I can't believe he could do it. This isn't Kyle. He took a bad childhood and turned it into a good life."

Collins once lived in an Indianapolis group home as a ward of the state. His girlfriend says the 18-year-old was taking depression medication. Police had arrested him before on a DUI charge.

According to the girlfriend's account: "He (Collins) called us and told us that they were getting pulled over for speeding. His friend didn't have a valid license. He asked us to come up to meet him."

Once on the scene, the girlfriend and another woman went inside for food. That's when they heard shots ring out.

Kyle Collins' girlfriend says she and her friend came running from the restaurant and that's when they heard the officer yelling for someone to call 911. She says it is her voice on the tape pleading for help.

Police have not released the 911 tape, but through tears the girlfriend told Eyewitness News:

"I wanted to save everybody. I didn't want anybody to die. I don't know why it came down the way that it did. I don't know where the gun came from. I didn't know he had a gun."

Collins has a sister living in Greenwood. His mother is en route from Florida. His friends say they're all anxious to find out what went wrong.
