A judge Friday sentenced a man with a history of mental illness to nearly 22 years in prison for killing a man at a downtown bus stop.
Circuit Court Judge Charles E. Poston sentenced Kevin Mirpuri on charges of second-degree murder and illegal use of a firearm in the 2009 shooting death of Jonathan McCalister.
Mirpuri, 25, pleaded guilty to the charges in April.
According to court records, Mirpuri accused McCalister of trying to rob him as they waited on April 26, 2009, with several other commuters at the bus loop in the 1000 block of Monticello Ave.
McCalister told Mirpuri no one was going to rob him and lifted his shirt to show Mirpuri that he was un armed. Mirpuri then shot McCalister three times and walked away, according to court records.
On Friday, two doctors testified that Mirpuri suffered from depression and had been prescribed medication . His mother, Olivia Mirpuri, testified that he had stopped taking it in the weeks before the shooting.
Poston ordered Mirpuri to participate in an intense mental health program as a condition for any eventual probation.
Memo: mental health
Although Kevin Mirpuri was prescribed medication for depression , his mother said, he stopped taking it weeks before the April 2009 shooting.
