Northampton woman, Debra Baggett, threatens judge, witness in court

NORTHAMPTON - A Northampton woman who police said kept a gun and a list of people she wanted to kill told a judge today she was ready to be imprisoned for 25 years to life.
"I want to be in jail for 25 years to life. I'd shoot you, too," Debra L. Baggett, 53, told Hampshire Superior Court Judge Judd J. Carhart during a bail hearing.
Baggett also told Carhart she would refuse to participate in a mental competency hearing that he ordered and that she wanted to fire her lawyer, Lee D. Flournoy, of Pittsfield. Baggett also swore, refused to stop talking when Flournoy and Carhart asked her to, and looked at one of the witnesses in the case and said she had her "in her cross hairs."
Baggett, who had pleaded innocent to a dozen charges stemming from her June 7 arrest, was scheduled to have a hearing on a request from Assistant District Attorney Michael A. Cahillane that she be held without right to bail because she is dangerous. But after Baggett told Carhart she wanted to fire her lawyer, Carhart called a brief recess.
Afterward, he ordered the competency hearing and continued the case until Friday for another hearing.
During today's hearing, Flournoy told Carhart that Baggett has not been getting the medication she needs while being held at the Western Massachusetts Regional Women's Correctional Center in Chicopee.
"She has had nothing but an aspirin since she was brought there. She is in withdrawal from anti-depressants," Flournoy told Carhart.
Cahillane said there is a concern about Baggett's safety because of an incident last weekend at the jail. Cahillane, who declined to detail the incident at the center, also noted Baggett's comment to the witness about being in her cross hairs.
Carhart told Baggett that he was ordering a competency hearing "based on what I have seen here this afternoon."
Baggett objected.
"I just checked out of a mental hospital, and I was given a clean bill of health. I will not cooperate with a mental exam," Baggett said.
After the court hearing was concluded, Baggett told Flournoy that she was revoking her "ability to speak to anyone about anything on my behalf."
Baggett is charged with two counts of threatening to murder, several firearms charges, receiving stolen property, making a false bomb threat, intimidation of a witness and possession of marijuana.
Police arrested Baggett at her home after reportedly receiving information that she had made threatening remarks about social workers and a judge involved in her son's custody case.
In 2006, Baggett pleaded no contest to a charge that she duct-taped her 5-year-old son to a chair while she was a student at Smith College.
