Palm Beach Police are crediting an officer with saving the life of a homeless woman who is thought to have attempted suicide Friday night.

The woman was taken to Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Palm Beach, where she was treated for an apparent overdose of an anti-depressant, Sgt. Brian Cohan said on Saturday.

Officer Robin Smith found the woman unconscious in the back seat of a car that had been pulled over on the Southern Boulevard Causeway about 6:15 p.m. on Friday, Cohan said.

"The car was parked suspiciously and Smith observed the woman sleeping, with an open pill container on the seat. She had taken about 30 Paxil," he said.

Some friends who live in Lake Worth said the woman had arrived in South Florida from Maryland about a month ago. She was unemployed and recently had been in and out of a halfway house, a friend told police.

The woman will receive a psychiatry evaluation.
