Man smashed TV and bed with hammer

THE break-up of a relationship led to a man damaging a range of items in his flat with a hammer.
Mark Richard Jones, 42, of Victoria Road, Bridlington, pleaded guilty to a charge of criminal damage at court last Wednesday.

Heather Levett, prosecuting, said Jones had called police in the early hours of December 28 and admitted damaging property belonging to his girlfriend in the flat they had shared.

Items, including a bed, other furniture, televisions and other electrical items had been damaged. A hammer was used on some of the property, the court heard.

He told officers he had split with his partner a few days earlier, was on medication for depression and had visited a number of pubs on the evening the damage was inflicted.

Mike Farr, mitigating, described the case as being the result of a 'one-off set of circumstances'.

Jones had been left feeling isolated when his partner decided to end their two year relationship and move back to be nearer her family in Wakefield.

After returning to the flat on the night, he lost his self-control and took out his frustrations on the property, Mr Farr said.

Jones and his girlfriend had since reconciled their differences and he was repairing some of the damaged items himself while paying for others to be replaced.

Sentencing Jones, presiding magistrate Tony Hardman said: "It was a very, very silly thing to do. We don't want to see you back in court again so keep out of trouble."

The bench also ordered Jones to pay £60 costs.
