Rail death widow 'was depressed'

A DEPRESSED widow committed suicide by walking in front of a speeding train, an inquest heard.

Cicely Vivian killed herself on October 27 last year when she stepped in front of a train travelling to London at 125mph through Huntingdon Railway Station.

The 86-year-old, of Hartford Road, Huntingdon, was receiving treatment for depression and was on medication when she was spotted pacing on the platform at the station.

She was seen wandering onto the track and was told by a railway official to come back. Half-an-hour later at around midday she walked back onto the track in front of the speeding train and was instantly killed.

The retired secretary was hospitalised during a particularly severe bout of depression in 2003. A statement read out at the inquest from her daughter Sally Vivian said everything seemed normal on the morning of her death.

An inquest recorded a verdict of suicide and coroner David Morris said: "Mrs Vivian had lived and breathed a busy and full life, raised a family and received help and support from the local health authority for her depression so this is an extremely tragic case and my condolences and sympathy goes to her family."
