Collinsville police evacuated about a dozen homes Friday and stormed the apartment building of a distraught security guard who was armed with two revolvers and allegedly had threatened to shoot his estranged wife.

Members of the city's SWAT team arrested Raymond Bohnenstiehl, 50, after a four-hour standoff around the Baker Apartments in the 200 block of south Seminary Street.

Police said Bohnenstiehl was being held on suspicion of aggravated assault and unlawful restraint.

Cindy Duff, 19, who lives next-door to Bohnenstiehl's third-story apartment, said she didn't know the siege was under way until she heard someone in the hallway calling his name as she was sitting down to lunch.

Duff said she heard police identify themselves and demand that Bohnenstiehl come out, so she opened her door to see what was going on. She found herself confronted by the heavily armed SWAT team.

''They thought I was him, coming out,'' Duff said.

After a tense pause, the officers swept her from harm's way.

Bohnenstiehl never fired any shots or threatened his neighbors, police said. Nonetheless, they weren't taking chances. Most residents on the block were evacuated to a church.

Chief David R. Niebur said that Bohnenstiehl's wife complained to police that he had threatened to shoot her about 8:40 a.m. Niebur said Bohnenstiehl was known to police because he had been involved in a drunken shooting incident in 1986 in Collinsville, and police have been summoned to his home several times because of domestic quarrels.

Bohnenstiehl's wife told police that her husband had been drinking vodka and whisky for two days, and that he was taking anti-depressants .
