NEW DELHI: A 34-year-old woman, married for nine years and with two children, has rattled the upscale Surajmal Vihar colony in east Delhi by allegedly killing her six-year-old daughter, Vrinda Pokhriyal, before hanging herself from the fan.
Police identified her as Sangeeta, a postgraduate in mathematics. The gory incident was discovered by her own son, seven-and-a-half-years-old Chaitanya, when he woke up on Tuesday morning. He was sleeping in his grandfather's room when the incident took place.
The police said Sangeeta was suffering from depression for over a year and had been on and off medication in the past three months.
The police have registered a case of murder at Vivek Vihar police station."Prima facie, it seems there was no forced entry into the room. Hence, we believe Vrinda was murdered by her own mother,'' said additional DCP (east) Asif Ali. Vrinda was studying in lower KG at DAV School.
Sources said Sangeeta got married to Hemant Pokhriyal, a civil engineer, working with a construction firm in Bharatpur in Rajasthan in 2002. "She was being treated at AIIMS and IBHAS for her mental condition. On Sunday night, she was sleeping with her daughter in her room. The incident must have occurred during the night. We are waiting for the postmortem report. We have been told that her husband left for Bharatpur four days ago,'' said a senior police officer.
"Sangeeta had recently got a government job but could not continue with it. We are investigating the reasons behind it. We have been told that there was some financial trouble in the family. We know that Hemant was the youngest among the three brothers -- one of his elder brothers is a doctor while the other is a teacher. We are looking into all reasons and will conclude our investigations soon,'' said an officer.
"What is troubling us is the fact that she killed her daughter who was very close to her. We will record the statements of the family members in the next two days,'' said the officer.
