A Livingston County woman, her 8-year-old son and a large dog were found shot to death in their home just north of Hartland, police said Tuesday.

Evidence at the scene indicates the shootings Friday may be a murder-suicide case, said Detective Sgt. Thomas Cremonte of the State Police's Brighton post.

David Fox found his wife, Lisa Fox, 33, and the couple's son, Nathan, 8, and the dog in the boy's bedroom at about 5:30 p.m. Police said they believe the shootings took place shortly before that time.

Lisa Fox had been treated for emotional problems after losing her 15-year-old son in an accident about a year ago, according to police reports.  The boy apparently died after trying to start a lawn mower in the garage.

Weapons were discovered at the scene of the shootings.  Cremonte declined to release further details, other than to say the boy's room "appeared in such a way that would lead one to believe it was a murder-suicide."

Cremonte said the preliminary autopsy report agreed with that conclusion.

But Cremonte said the investigation is continuing.

If the case is a murder-suicide, it would be unusual, Cremonte said.

"Women usually don't kill themselves in such a violent manner, and women don't usually kill their children," he said.
