Insomnia and depression are often symptoms that show up in the same conditions like PTSD, but could also be side effects associated with certain medications .

Below is a list of diseases and conditions associated with symptoms like insomnia and depression, as well as a list of medications related to similar side effects.

We are not medical professionals, and these may not be comprehensive lists. Please contact your doctor if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms or side effects, or similar health issues.

Insomnia and Depression Are Symptoms Of

Sleep Apnea: Sleep apnea is a condition in which you stop breathing, briefly, in your sleep. After you stop breathing your brain detects the low oxygen level and you wake up partially and adjust so that you start breathing again. Most people do not wake up enough to be aware of what is happening, but constantly waking up through the night can lead to sleep deprivation. Sleep apnea symptoms include insomnia, depression, headaches, mood swings, daytime fatigue, and a decreased interest in sex.

Hypoglycemia: Hypoglycemia is a metabolic disorder in which the body produces too much insulin causing blood sugar levels to plummet. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include mood swings, anxiety, depression, insomnia, dizziness, aggression, irritability, and more. There are several types of hypoglycemia some involving insulin resistance and one that involves a failure to process glucose properly at the cellular level.

Epilepsy: Epilepsy is a condition in which abnormal electrical activity in the brain causes seizures. People with epilepsy are not always aware that they have seizures unless someone else observes them and tells them what is happening. Symptoms of epilepsy include depression, lapses in memory, insomnia, unexplained accidents or injuries, confusion, and changes in behavior.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: PTSD is an anxiety disorder that occurs as a result of a very terrifying experience. It is very common in combat veterans, but also affects survivors of natural disasters, victims of domestic abuse and other violent attacks, and accident victims. PTSD symptoms include flashbacks, nightmares, insomnia, depression, guilt, anger, and emotional numbness.
