Thug jailed for attack on boy, aged 14

CHRISTOPHER JAMES HALL: Given indefinite jail term

A ROBBER who stabbed a 14-year-old boy in the back with a kitchen knife has been jailed indefinitely.

Christopher James Hall, 21, cycled home to fetch the weapon after encountering the victim in the Acomb area of York. The attack nearly cost the boy his kidney, York Crown Court heard.

Hall was on bail at the time for robbing two other 14-year-olds in Acomb Road. He had no previous convictions for assault.

"You really have been making up for lost time," said the Recorder of York, Judge Paul Hoffman.

Of the knife offence he said: "I am prepared to think there was something of a background here, but such background as there was cannot provide any justification or mitigation for what you did."

Hall, of Mowbray Drive, Acomb, pleaded guilty to two charges of robbery and one of wounding with intent.

The judge decided he was so dangerous he was given an indefinite sentence for public protection, with an order to serve at least two-and-a-half years before he can apply for parole.

His victim's mother welcomed the sentence, saying: "We feel it's appropriate for what he did," but she declined to comment further.

Simon Kealey, prosecuting, said the knife victim was out with friends in Acomb in the early evening of October 19 when Hall turned to him and said: "I hear your friends are going to do me."

Hall cycled off and returned shortly afterwards with the kitchen knife.

"You didn't think I would do it," he told the first victim, before stabbing him in the back.

The boy was in hospital for four days, while doctors gave him a 50-50 chance of keeping his kidney. He still has both kidneys.

In the previous incident, in June last year, two other 14-year-old boys had stopped to make a telephone call in Acomb Road when Hall and another man approached.

The second man told them to hand over their possessions and threatened to use a knife. Hall searched the boys and took their phones and wallets.

He later went on the run to escape sentence.

For Hall, Nicholas Johnson said he fled to Scarborough, but handed himself in last January.

No knife was produced during the Acomb Road robberies, which occurred when a cannabis deal was about to take place. The court heard the stab victim had threatened to knife Hall in an incident before the encounter on October 19.

Hall had not gone out with a knife, but had drunk a lot of alcohol and that had combined with anti-depressants he was taking to make him drop his inhibitions.

A 20-year-old Acomb man was jointly charged with robbing the 14-year-old boys on Acomb Road, but was acquitted by a jury.
