FORT MYERS (AP) - The father of rapper Young MC was sentenced Thursday to 15 years of probation for the stabbing death of his wife.

The rap singer, whose real name is Marvin Young, stood by Cleveland Young's side in Lee Circuit Court as the judge ignored the state guidelines of 4 to 7 years in prison and sentenced Young to probation.

The defense attorney, the prosecutor and Lee Circuit Judge William Nelson agreed it was an unusual situation.

Young, 58, was convicted of manslaughter in December for stabbing his wife, Lucille, to death in their Cape Coral home in November 1994.

Family members and psychiatrists testified that Young had slipped into a deep depression in the weeks before he killed his wife.

Lucille and Cleveland Young had sought treatment for his depression. He had an appointment the morning of the killing with a psychiatrist, and he was taking the anti-depressant Prozac.

There also was evidence Cleveland Young had tried to commit suicide, either before or after his wife's death. He had jagged cuts on his wrists, indicative of hesitation.
