A rapist has been jailed for eight years for an attack which a judge described as "the worst nightmare that women can possibly have".

Matthew Kidd, 53, told his victim that he had been spying on her before repeatedly raping her in her home.

At the High Court in Edinburgh, judge Lord Philip said it had been a "terrifying and humiliating attack".

"It is, I think, the worst case of rape I have ever had to deal with," he told Kidd, from Knightswood, Glasgow.

The judge said he would have jailed Kidd for 11 years if he had not pleaded guilty and spared his victim the ordeal of giving evidence.

Unable to sleep

"To a degree her life has been ruined," he added.

The court heard that the 37-year-old woman had been unable to sleep properly, had been prescribed sedatives and now refused to answer her door unless she knew who was there.

Advocate depute John Hamilton, prosecuting, said Kidd had knocked on her door on 5 March.

He told her: "I've been watching you for ages" and threatened her with a knife.

She ran to her bedroom and bolted the door, but Kidd smashed his way into the room and raped the woman five times.

He fled after the woman begged him to leave, telling her: "Have a nice life."

The judge heard that Kidd had been prescribed Prozac for depression and had been given a piece of cannabis by a friend on the day of the rape "to make him feel better".

Defence advocate Martin Jones QC said that alcohol had combined with the drugs Kidd had taken to have a "disinhibiting" effect on his client.

Supervision order

He said Kidd was full of remorse and wanted to apologise to the woman.

"This was an offence, dreadful as it was, which was entirely out of character for him," said the lawyer.

"He has been searching for an explanation for why he did what he did and still struggles to find an explanation."

Lord Philip also ordered that Kidd be kept under strict supervision for three years after the end of his prison sentence.
