Man dies as result of shooting, wife improving

LEBANON -- A 55-year-old Marshall County man who allegedly shot his wife before turning the gun on himself died at an Oklahoma City hospital early Wednesday.

"Billy Don Bean was pronounced deceased at 1:25 a.m. at Integris Baptist Medical Center," Marshall County Deputy Ed Kent said of the report received from the Oklahoma City medical facility. Bean was admitted to Integris Marshall Memorial Hospital for emergency treatment before being airlifted to Oklahoma City.

The officer also learned Bean's estranged wife, 55-year-old Patricia, is reported improved at Parkland Hospital in Dallas.

"I talked with the ICU nurse at 6 a.m. (Wednesday)," Kent said. "She (Mrs. Bean) was in ICU following surgery, her condition was stable and they anticipate she will recover."

Authorities learned of the incident about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday via a 911 report to central dispatch at the Marshall County sheriff's office. Law enforcement officers responded to the Bean home, located about a mile north of state Highway 32 near Lebanon. Mrs. Bean was found on the porch of a neighbor's home. Her husband was found beside a nearby barn. Both had wounds to the facial area.

Authorities said the woman was alert when they first contacted her. She told officers her husband shot her.

Kent said a .22-caliber revolver, believed to be the weapon, involved was recovered. Based on information obtained from relatives and family friends, the shooting was connected to the couple's recent divorce. Relatives and people acquainted with the couple were stunned by the incident.

In his subsequent investigation, Kent was advised Bean was depressed and on medication. However, there was no indication of any problems. Reportedly, both were at the home where he was picking up some items. Kent said Bean ate lunch at his mother's home.

"When he signed the (divorce) papers a couple of weeks ago, the lawyers said there was no indication of any problems," a family friend said Wednesday. "They had lived there ever since they were married and had an antique business in Lebanon."
