Man faces charges after baby thrown out window

Police said a White Settlement man is facing felony charges after allegedly throwing a one-week-old baby out of a second-story window.
Police said they were called to a residence Monday night where the incident occurred, and arrested Clint Hawkins. Hawkins allegedly carried his nephew into a back bedroom of the home and closed the door while the child's parents were in the front room.
"Cries started coming from the bedroom," said White Settlement police spokesman Brian Seibel. "They went into the bedroom and the child was not in the bedroom. The mother heard the child crying and looked out of the window, and saw the child out the window. "
The infant, just five days old, fell 13 feet to the ground below. He is recovering at Cook Children's Medical Center, and is now in the custody of Child Protective Services.
"He's doing surprisingly well," said CPS spokesperson Marissa Gonzalez. "It really is a miracle (for) a baby this little. There are some concerns with some head injuries that he may have sustained, but overall his prognosis is very good, and they expect him to recover."
Hawkins' father says his son, who suffers from depression, was taking medication for mental illness and must have snapped.
"Sometimes he does great for so long, like four, five, or six weeks, and all of the sudden something clicks in his brain to do something like that," Jerry Hawkins said. "We don't understand why."
Child Protective Services officials said this is not the first encounter with this family. The state removed an older child from the home last year following allegations of abuse.
"Workers had been working with the family to see if there was possibility of reuniting them," Gonzalez said. "We don't know where that stands right now, but of course the chances are much smaller."
Clint Hawkins is facing one felony charge of injury to a child; he is being held on a $100,000 bond.
