A Metairie man pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide Friday and was sentenced to seven years in prison for killing a teenage pedestrian in Kenner last year.

Troy Campbell, 31, of 3217 Lake Trail Drive, was charged with killing Quartus Bryant, who died after he was hit by Campbell's 2001 Ford Expedition on April 8, 2005.

Chief Judge Robert Pitre of the 24th Judicial District Court handled the sentencing.

Bryant's mother, Quinta Bryant, was too distraught to attend the hearing and give a statement before the sentencing, Assistant District Attorney Donnie Rowan said.

Bryant was on the sidewalk in front of Kenner's City Hall on Williams Boulevard about 11 p.m. when he was run over. He died the next day at Charity Hospital, police said.

After hitting Bryant, Campbell knocked over a flag pole and rammed the fire station next to City Hall. Police said witnesses reported seeing the driver slumped over the wheel.

Campbell passed a field sobriety test and breath test at the scene, but was later booked with vehicular homicide after he admitted to having alcohol earlier that day and to taking an antidepressant and another medication used to treat bipolar disorder, police said. Both medications carry warnings against driving.
