Sheriff's deputies surrounded a Hazel Dell apartment complex Saturday night and arrested an escapee from an Oregon correctional institution.

Jeff Thibert, 28, an escapee from the Mill Creek Correctional Facility in Salem was found hiding in a friend's apartment at the Dell Terrace Apartments, 7420 N.E. Hazel Dell Ave., around 9:45 p.m.

Undersheriff Paul Pastor said deputies learned that Thibert had walked away from the facility Friday and might be at a friend's apartment at the Hazel Dell complex.

When deputies came calling, Thibert allegedly slammed the door, climbed onto the roof and evaded officers. At least a dozen deputies and a police dog were called to the scene to search for Thibert, who officers feared had a gun. Thibert was found hiding in a crawl space in the apartment and arrested. He was unarmed.

Pastor said neighbors in the apartment complex helped deputies by pointing to where Thibert was hiding during the search. Pastor said Thibert has convictions for burglary, auto theft and malicious mischief.

STAND OFF : Members of the sheriff's SWAT team rushed into a home north of Battle Ground early Saturday after a man allegedly took an overdose of pills and threatened to shoot anyone who entered his home.

The man, 41, was taken into custody and moved to a hospital, according to a sheriff's report.

About 10:16 p.m. Friday, the report said, Deputy Daniel Fronk was sent to the man's home in the 14000 block of Northeast 326th Street, several miles north of Battle Ground. A witness said the man drank heavily, took an overdose of antidepressant pills and fired a gunshot before a relative called 9-1-1.

The man, seen inside the home with a .25-caliber pistol, threatened to shoot anyone who came in and then shoot himself, the report said. Deputies called for the SWAT team, which arrived about 2 a.m. Saturday. About an hour later, after communications with the man failed, the SWAT officers rushed the home and found him passed out in the living room.
