ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - An Annapolis man tried to kill his wife in a car crash outside the State House, and then beat her after his attempt failed, police said.

Douglas Lund, 36, was ordered held without bond Tuesday on a charge of second-degree murder for allegedly trying to kill his wife, Amy Lund, 32, on Sept. 7.

Lund and his wife went for a drive early in the morning because Lund could not sleep, police said. Lund drove the car into a metal fence outside the State House, allegedly unfastening his wife's seat belt before intentionally crashing into the fence, police said.

He then pulled Ms. Lund from the car and beat her head against the pavement several times, according to police. Ms. Lund suffered a broken collarbone and finger and a shattered vertebrae.

Lund was taking Zoloft to treat depression, a drug that his mother blamed for the incident. "He took the drug and started hallucinating," said Jo Ann Lund.

Lund will have another bail review hearing this week after a competency evaluation, said a spokesman for the State's Attorney's office.
