Man Dies After Being Struck By Lorry On M1

Jul 10 2008 By Shelley Marriott

A KEGWORTH man died shortly after being discharged from psychiatric care when he was struck by a lorry on the M1, an inquest heard.

Kevin Wall died on March 16, last year, when he was parked on the hard shoulder of the north bound carriageway of the motorway, near junction 22.

The post mortem revealed that he died from multiple injuries.

Mr Wall, 54, of Packington Hill, had stopped his green Mitsibishi Shogun sport on the hard shoulder at around 10.30pm with no lights on.

He was hit by a white Daf lorry driven by Simon Corbett travelling at 56mph.

It was heard at the inquest that Mr Corbett could see a man crouched near the front of a car parked in the hard shoulder who dived head first in front of his lorry.

Mr Wall was then run over by several more vehicles, including a silver BMW which pulled over.

In January 2007 Mr Wall was put on a pyschiatric ward at Queen's Medical Centre where he was under the care of Dr Asiegbunam.

Dr Asiegbunam said: "I felt he was experiencing a depressive illness, he was anxious and distressed and I put him on anti depressants."

At Mr Hall's last review meeting on March 13, with Dr Asiegbunam and community psychiatric nurse, Martina Parsonage, they said he had improved noticeably and felt his care could be continued in the community.

Mr Wall's wife of 26 years, Maureen, with whom he had two sons, said: "The man was confident, happy in his outlook, that was the person that he was.

"He changed in November and that is very hard to understand.

"He was very active, liked being out and liked exercise.

"He enjoyed the garden and the outdoor life."

A verdict was recorded that he was a pedestrian killed on the motorway.
