SSRI Stories Note:  The Physicians Desk Reference states that antidepressants can cause a craving for alcohol and can cause alcohol abuse. Also, the liver cannot metabolize the antidepressant and the alcohol simultaneously, thus leading to higher levels of both alcohol and the antidepressant in the human body.

Man lashes out at police officer

Kieran Campbell | 2nd March 2011

A CONCOCTION of anti-depressants and alcohol spun Matthew Phillip Ferro into an angry rage.

After being told by police to quiet down and then leave the Maroochydore area or be arrested, Ferro lashed out.

He told a senior police officer: “You (expletive) fat old (expletive), what are you going to do about it?”

“I’ll smash your head in, fat (expletive).”

Ferro struck his leg out to try to kick a police officer.

He pleaded guilty yesterday in Maroochydore Magistrates Court to assault or obstructing a police officer and committing a public nuisance on November 9, 2009.

Defence lawyer Justin Crosby told the court the matter had not been dealt with earlier because Ferro suffered from major depression and was hospitalised last year.

Magistrate John Parker told Ferro his behaviour was “disgraceful” and he was lucky to not be going to jail.

“I don’t care whether you’re depressed or not. Half of the world is depressed.

“That doesn’t give you a right to abuse a police officer and kick them and carry on like a pork chop.”

Ferro was sentenced to 80 hours of community service.
