Last week's murder of Crystal Lake shopkeeper Naoki Kamijima was the first case handled by the McHenry County Major Investi-gation Assistance Team.

Sheriff Keith Nygren's evaluation?

"They made it all come together," Nygren said of the arrest of suspect Douglas Vitaioli.

The MIAT team consisted of 25 investigators from 17 local, county and state police agencies.

When Kamijima was found dead from a gunshot wound to the head behind the counter of his convenience store, Crystal Lake Police Chief Ron Sheley, Deputy Police Chief Howard Parth, and Detective Sgt. Dave Linder decided to call in the task force for assistance.

Within an hour, investigators from around the county were at the Crystal Lake police station.

Investigators are needed to collect evidence at the crime scene, interview witnesses, canvass neighborhoods and follow up on leads.

The team worked around the clock and within 24 hours had a surveillance team following Vitaioli.

The 38-year-old Crystal Lake man was arrested after he allegedly attempted to steal an armful of frozen pizzas from a local grocery store.

When faced with a major case in the past, local police agencies would call in the McHenry County Sheriff and state police for help.

The task force now can cover more ground during the critical hours right after a crime occurs, he said.

"Having the organization with predetermined forms and formats and pre-assigned jobs is a great deal more efficient than bringing a group together that might not know each other," Sheley said.

Vitaioli is believed to have singled out Kamijima because he was a Japanese native, Sheley said.

Before Kamijima was shot, Vitaioli stopped at another Crystal Lake store and asked the national origin of the two workers there, police said. The quick action of the task force may have prevented others from getting hurt, police officials said.

Drug interaction: Roger Feitshans was on the doorstep of a guilty plea to an aggravated criminal sexual abuse charge when McHenry County Judge Thomas A. Schemerhorn asked him a question.

Was he taking any prescription medication?

The answer negated the plea, and resulted in additional charges and a trial date for the 37-year-old Hebron man and onetime community girl's softball coach.

Feitshans said he was taking Zoloft, a mood stabilizer.

Schemerhorn noted the drug can affect how clearly a person thinks.

Feitshans is accused of fondling the two girls ages 15 and 16. It was when a third girl came forward that he decided on the plea.

But with his decision to forgo the guilty plea, the state's attorney's office has added two additional charges of aggravated criminal sexual abuse involving the third girl, who is younger than 13.

Feitshans' bond recently was lowered from $250,000 to $30,000 on the new charges. He faces a trial in June.

No charges: Charges will not be filed in the March 7 death of Robert A. Mohr of Johnsburg, according to the McHenry County Sheriff's Police.

Police say a friend drove Mohr home the previous night after it had snowed.

Driving a 1982 Chevy Suburban, the McHenry man reportedly was unaware that as he backed out, he dragged his friend down the snow- covered driveway.

Mohr was found dead the next morning at about 9:19 a.m
