Taunton

There were three homicides in the Silver City and its environs in 2009, two of them shootings, the third and most recent a beating.

Gas station attendant Hegazy Sayed was shot to death on Oct. 25 at around 10 p.m. while working alone on a Sunday night at Planet Petroleum, a gas and service station located at 274 Winthrop St.

Police say that Sayed a 45-year-old Egyptian national who is survived by an American wife and four children in Egypt never had a chance to hand over any money before he was blown away.

The accused shooter, Steven Foster, 37, allegedly first leveled a blast from a stolen .22-caliber rifle through a glass door, hitting Sayed in the head. He next came inside the building, police said, and with Sayed lying defenseless on the floor shot him in the head a second time.

Police said they arrested Foster who recently had been renting a room at the Bristol Lodging boarding house at 68 Broadway after he turned himself in the following afternoon.

Less than five minutes after the shooting Foster reportedly was caught on a CVS surveillance camera walking barefoot into the nearby store, and then exiting while carrying a pair of slippers.

Police say that he had lost his shoes right after the shooting when he ran into some woods to change his clothes.

A woman who said that she had cleaned out Foster’s room after he was arrested, later told the Taunton Daily Gazette that she’d found six or seven containers of pills left on top of the refrigerator.

She identified at least two of the prescription meds as Cymbalta and Trazodone, both of which are anti-depressants.

She also said that Foster, although he didn’t talk much and kept to himself, mentioned that he had Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare neurological disorder that affects the feet and legs.

Court records indicate that Foster had been on probation since February, after pleading guilty in Norfolk Superior Court to breaking and entering resulting and putting a person in fear.

According to a woman who manages Bristol Lodging, before Foster moved in she was contacted by his probation officer, who told her that Foster needed a place to stay after his girlfriend insisted that he move out of her Dighton house.

The day after the shooting, court records show, a restraining order previously taken out against Foster by Christina Lima of Dighton was formally filed. By then he had been charged with murder, armed robbery, intimidating a witness and possession of an illegal firearm.
