SSRI Stories Note:  The Physicians Desk Reference states that antidepressants can cause a craving for alcohol and can cause alcohol abuse. Also, the liver cannot metabolize the antidepressant and the alcohol simultaneously, thus leading to higher levels of both alcohol and the antidepressant in the human body.

Teen mum threatened to headbutt garda after funeral

A TEENAGE mother who drunkenly threatened to headbutt a female garda was upset as she had attended a friend's funeral earlier that day, a court heard.

Bridget Connors (19) roared abuse at a male officer and also tried to kick out at a second female garda, after she mixed alcohol with her anti-depression medication. A court heard that Connors refused to give her name to gardai for over five hours. A judge ordered a pre-sentence report and adjourned the matter to a date in March.

Connors admitted before Tallaght District Court to public drunkenness as well as threatening and abusive behaviour and refusing to provide her name to gardai in an incident outside her home at Drumcairn Avenue in Tallaght.

She also admitted to violent behaviour in Tallaght Garda Station.

Garda Adrian O'Sullivan said he was on mobile patrol on Drumcairn Avenue shortly before 5am on October 6 last when a car, which was driving towards gardai, pulled in and parked at the side of the road.

Garda O'Sullivan said Connors was sitting in the driver's seat, but denied she had been driving the car. She also refused to hand over the car keys to gardai. The garda said Connors was very drunk, and started shouting and roaring at him, causing residents to come to the windows to see what the commotion was.

VIOLENT

Garda O'Sullivan said the defendant struggled when he went to arrest her, and two female gardai had to assist in the arrest. The court heard that Connors was extremely violent, and she threatened to headbutt Garda Roisin Maguire. She also tried to kick out at a second female garda.

Garda O'Sullivan said Connors refused to give him her name and address for over five hours.

The court heard she has no previous convictions.

Defence solicitor John O'Leary said Connors was a young mother of two children. She suffered from depression, and had been on medication for four years. Mr O'Leary said Connors was not allowed to drink while on the medication, but on the day in question she had attended a friend's funeral, was upset, and had been drinking. He said she apologised for her behaviour.

Judge James McDonnell said Connors had no business taking alcohol while on medication.
