A Hampden physician testified yesterday in Hampden Superior Court that he prescribed anti-depressants for Ronald P. Warner in the weeks before Warner was charged with attacking his wife.
Dr. Mark Radzicki defended his decision to prescribe medication for Warner without first seeing him, saying Warner told him he had been diagnosed as having attention deficit disorder coupled with depression.

Warner, 41, of 263 Scantic Road, former deputy chief of Hampden's volunteer fire department, is accused of assaulting his wife, Robin, on June 5 in their home by threatening her with a shotgun while she was handcuffed to a chair.

He has pleaded innocent to charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery and making threats to commit murder.

Warner is to present a defense that he was mentally impaired at the time of the offenses and is expected to have an expert testify today on his behalf. Judge Bertha D. Josephson is presiding at the jury-waived trial.

Radzicki, who faced charges in May that he was operating under the influence of prescription drugs, waived his right not to incriminate himself and said he was not impaired when he issued prescriptions for Warner.
