Police in southwest suburban Lyons subdued a man with rubber-tipped bullets early today after he allegedly held officers at bay for three hours and then walked out of his house with a handgun pointed at his head.

Curtis Wolford, 41, of the 7700 block of Ogden Avenue, was taken to MacNeal Hospital, Berwyn, by paramedics and was being kept there for observation, police said. Further details on his condition were not immediately available.

Police said relatives told them that Wolford takes medication for depression.

Lyons Police Cmdr. Brian Kuratko said officers went to Wolford's residence around 12:30 a.m. in response to a report of a domestic disturbance. They were met by Wolford's wife and six-year-old daughter, who said the couple had argued and that Wolford had armed himself with a gun.

Wolford yelled that he would shoot any officer who attempted to enter the home and also threatened to shoot himself, Kuratko said.

About 50 police officers from nearby communities were dispatched to the scene by the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System, and they evacuated several nearby houses. They made contact with Wolford by calling his cellular phone, but he later turned off the device, Kuratko said.

About 3:30 a.m., Wolford allegedly walked out the front door of his home with a gun pointed at his head. Police fired rubber-tipped bullets at him from a non-lethal gun, which enabled officers to disarm and subdue him, Kuratko said.

As of this afternoon, there were no details on whether charges had been filed against Wolford.
